Our thinking

Let's talk integrated marketing campaigns!

Integrated marketing campaigns: What are they and why do you need them?

Integrated marketing campaigns are a hot topic in the marketing world. While you may know everyone’s talking about them, you’re not alone if you’re wondering if you’re the only one who’s not entirely sure what they are.

Nancy Allison, Account Manager at CR, provides some clarity by sharing her expertise:

So what are integrated marketing campaigns?

Much of the confusion surrounding integrated marketing comes down to the fact that there’s no single definition of what an integrated marketing campaign is. Rather than adding to the countless definitions you’ll find on the web, at CR we like to keep things simple and focus the key qualities of an integrated marketing campaign.

An effective integrated marketing campaign will have:

1. A consistent message and identity inspired by a big idea which forms the foundation of the campaign
2. A consistent message and identity which is brought to life and trickled across several types of on and offline media over an adequate time period

Why are integrated marketing campaigns so important?

An effective integrated marketing campaign reinforces what your brand stands for. It creates a strong, unique and memorable identity.

If you were to communicate several messages using several identities across several media, your brand and investment would be diluted.

Your customers would struggle to grasp the reason why they should buy – and that’s if you’re lucky enough that they’ve managed to recall your brand amongst the mass of other marketing they’re exposed to.

Implementing a successful integrated marketing campaign

Whether you have an in-house marketing team or use a marketing agency, the principles for achieving an integrated marketing campaign are the same: use a consistent message with a consistent identity across several types of media and over a suitably adequate length of time.

Some key pointers to remember:

• Be creative to successfully apply the same concept across different media. A printed direct mailer for example is very different to a banner advert on a website. Yet, if they both form part of your integrated campaign, they will both need the same consistent message and identity but applied in a slightly different way
• The media you choose needs to be carefully selected so you can be sure it is appropriate for your target market and fits with your wider marketing strategy
• Be clear about what you want customers to do. If you want to drive customers to your website for example, then the call to action across all media always needs to be just that

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, there must be a genuine and original big idea that forms the foundation of the campaign. The big idea needs to be unique, nail your brand, and drive and unify your marketing. It needs to communicate who you are, what you do and differentiate you from your competition. Without a solid big idea, the message and identity of your integrated campaign will be weak and its overall effectiveness will be compromised.

If you’re struggling with any aspect of creating an integrated campaign then of course, our team at CR are here to help.

Hi everyone!

My name’s Anthea and I’m new here at CR as an Account Executive.

I recently graduated from Cardiff University with a degree in Journalism and Media where I gained mountains of experience in journalism, editorial, radio and TV. I also had a number of marketing positions over the course of my degree, was an editor at the student newspaper and did an internship with a PR agency and yes, I was very busy!

After graduating, I wanted to work at a marketing agency and having always had an eye for design and a creative flair, CR was the perfect fit for me.

Although I’ve not been here long, I’ve already been made to feel right at home. Everyone’s been really welcoming, the work is interesting with such a variety of clients and, with something always going on, there’s never a dull day. On top of that, working in the office has introduced me to some fantastic radio stations!
CR is a fun and vibrant company to work for and I am already really enjoying working here, which has made saying goodbye to student life that little bit easier.

Account management is such a varied role, which means that I can get stuck in with so many things, but which also means that I have a lot to learn. I’m looking forward to the challenges that the next few weeks will bring and hopefully, this will be the start of a long, bright and fruitful future with CR.

Dylan Thomas Skin Trade going down a storm

John Williams, Chief Executive of Theatr Iolo commented “It has been my pleasure to work with CR on a number of campaigns. With ‘Adventures in the Skin Trade”, the imagery developed certainly helped sell the show internationally to Sydney Opera House and Arts Centre Melbourne. In Cardiff, we targeting a 14-30 audience with outdoor advertising and sold 88% of the available tickets with more than three weeks to go. The production out-performed our income targets in Cardiff and several of the reviewers specifically complimented the marketing materials.

Cadwyn’s Can Do Contractors – Vehicle Box

Our client Cadwyn really are leading the way in their field. They strive to ensure that they are the market leaders within the housing association sector and push boundaries to their limits. In the summer of 2014, they launched a new company – Can Do Contractors. The main focus of the new company is to provide planned maintenance work and compete for work in the private sector. The key promotional avenue for the company was to ensure that their vans, which are on the road 24/7, were wrapped with the perfect messaging that reflected their range of services. CR working closely with Can Do, suggested that the vans become ’toolboxes’. The tools that are displayed on each van has a direct connection with the services  they offer.

Ways marketing agencies can maximise ROI for your business

The importance of responsive web

Responsive web design (RWD) is a web design approach aimed at crafting sites to provide an optimal viewing experience—easy reading and navigation with a minimum of resizing, panning, and scrolling—across a wide range of devices (from mobile phones to desktop computer monitors).

A site designed with RWD adapts the layout to the viewing environment by using fluid, proportion-based grids, flexible images, and CSS3 media queries, an extension of the @media rule. The fluid grid concept calls for page element sizing to be in relative units like percentages, rather than absolute units like pixels or points.

Flexible images are also sized in relative units, so as to prevent them from displaying outside their containing element.
Media queries allow the page to use different CSS style rules based on characteristics of the device the site is being displayed on, most commonly the width of the browser.
